nisadejapan on January 15, 2025: "One of the highlights of skiing in Japan is soaking in a natural hot spring (onsen) ♨️ after a day on the slopes. 🎿 Japan, with its volcanic landscape, has more hot spring sources than anywhere else in the world. Each onsen is unique, offering mineral-rich waters known for their health benefits, from easing sore muscles to rejuvenating the skin. It’s no surprise that onsens have been a part of Japanese culture for centuries. If you’re visiting Rusutsu this season, don’t miss Kotobuki Onsen. With indoor and outdoor baths offering stunning mountain views 🏔️, it’s an ideal spot to relax. The sodium bicarbonate in the water is believed to help with muscle aches and leave your skin feeling smooth. Guests staying at The Vale Rusutsu can enjoy complimentary access, making it even easier to unwind. Make sure an onsen visit is part of your Japan ski trip—it’s a uniquely Japanese way to unwind. #Onsen #SkiHoliday #Rusutsu #VisitJapan #Hokkaido #TravelHokkaido #WinterGetaway #TheValeRusutsu".

The onsen is an ancient and cherished Japanese custom, and bathers need to be completely naked and thoroughly clean before entering the mineral-rich water.
We ask all guests to be respectful of Japanese culture and etiquette.
Wash yourself thoroughly at the shower stations before entering the water, and remember to ease yourself in; the waters are often piping hot.
Respect quiet, relaxation zones: communal onsens encourage silence or speaking at a lower volume.
No running or diving into the onsen.
Children should be supervised; always check with the property if there are age and safety restrictions.
Yes. You must be completely naked to bathe in Japan’s mineral hot pools. The communal onsens at our condo hotels are gender segregated, with separate changing and entry points for men and women.
Onsen are an ancient Japanese tradition, and observing the correct rituals is both respectful and the ideal way to immerse yourself in local culture.
While it may be frightening at first, going naked into an onsen is a very safe and normal practice in Japan; relax and give it a try.
Generally, no special items are required beyond your towel, which is provided for each guest at our condo hotels and chalets with on-site onsens.
