Chalet Review: Tsubasa at Hanaridge

Please enter location/property

Tucked into the serene woodlands of Niseko’s exclusive Hanaridge Estate, Tsubasa at Hanaridge is a triumph of design that marries minimalist luxury with the natural beauty of Hokkaido. This award-winning chalet was crowned Japan’s Best Ski Chalet 2024 by the World Ski Awards, and beckons travellers in search of both sophistication and tranquillity.

The chalet stands out for its striking architecture, pared-back elegance, and immersive nature-centric design. The Y-shaped layout and vast glass expanses provide every room with a view, whether it’s of the snow-capped peak of Mount Yotei or the misty forest at dawn.

A major highlight? The 40sqm onsen, which serves as the ideal refuge after an action-packed day on the slopes. In winter, guests also enjoy butler service and chauffeured vehicles for the ultimate luxury chalet experience.

The Location: A Private Retreat

There’s no better way to write the next chapter of luxury travel than at Tsubasa Chalet, where every window frames a wonder, and every space invites you to live in the moment.

Nestled just 1.5km away from the Hanazono Resort, Tsubasa Chalet is just minutes from Niseko’s famed powder slopes. Its proximity to the slopes and forest-shielded position provide both adventure and pampered seclusion.

The chalet is just a short drive to the top restaurants in the heart of Hirafu, as well as local eateries in Kutchan. Our recommendations include fine dining establishment Moliere Montagne (1.7km or a 2-minute drive away), pizzas at B.C.C. White Rock (2.2km away), an exquisite multi-course meal at Tempura Araki (8-minute drive), aprés-ski cocktails and bar bites at Niseko Confidential and Edomae-style sushi at Sushi Shin (both about 7.5km or a 10-minute drive away). For coffee breaks, popular picks include Green Farm Café (7.3km or a 9-minute drive), which is also known for its excellent brunch options.

The Design: Beautiful Geometry
Conceptualised by renowned architect Riccardo Tossani, Tsubasa Chalet embodies his signature style: clean lines, and seamless integration with its surroundings. The chalet’s distinctive Y-shaped layout unfolds across three levels, each branch oriented to maximise sweeping views of Mount Yotei and the surrounding forest. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood every space with light, blurring the boundary between indoors and out.

Spanning 530sqm, Tsubasa Chalet offers generously appointed interiors for up to 10 guests (12 at maximum capacity). The second floor hosts two master suites with panoramic views, along with guest bedrooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom. There is also a cosy bunk room with two bunk beds for two additional guests (at extra cost).

The entry level ushers you into a luxurious open-plan living, dining, and kitchen area, graced by designer furnishings, a grand piano, and a gas fireplace — a setting tailor-made for memorable gatherings or unwinding by the fire.

The Amenities: Wellness & Fitness Retreat
Tsubasa Chalet elevates the après-ski experience with its own private natural onsen — a generous 40sqm space that offers both indoor and outdoor hot spring baths fed by natural sources. This onsen is a highlight, perfect for soothing sore muscles and enjoying the crisp air and natural surroundings. Guests can also make full use of the gym and yoga studio, designed for both contemplative stretches and active workouts.

Additional amenities include ski storage, drying and utility rooms, Wi-Fi, climate controls (both air conditioning and heating), underfloor heating, a wine cellar, and EV charging; a thoughtful mix of comfort and modern ease.

Tsubasa Chalet is not just a place to stay. It’s an alpine sanctuary where architecture, comfort, and nature converge. Whether you’re a ski enthusiast seeking world-class powder or a design lover seeking peaceful luxury, this chalet offers an unforgettable Niseko experience. Its reputation as Japan’s top ski chalet at the World Ski Awards 2024 is well-earned, and each feature imbues the stay with exceptional grace.
