Hokkaido's global reputation rests on its exquisite, airy powder, with Niseko emerging as a premier destination among travelers worldwide. Yet, within the province lie numerous hidden treasures, with Furano standing atop Hokkaido's esteemed 'Powder Triangle.' In summer, it captivates with sprawling lavender fields, cascading waterfalls, and serene ponds, while winter unveils its untouched allure, where powder piles but the crowds don’t.
When booking a stay in Furano, the first thing to lock in is where to stay. Fenix Furano and Fenix West, nestled at the base of Furano ski resort, offer a spectrum of lodging options, from suites to multi-bedroom apartments and penthouses. Each property boasts top-rated dining establishments: Ronin Coffee and Fenix Restaurant and Bar.
The next thing to do for your trip is build out an itinerary. Winter beckons with world-class skiing at Furano Ski Resort, featuring two zones, 950 vertical meters, and 28 runs, all accessible with affordable lift passes. Moreover, Furano's backcountry terrain entices adventurers, with Summit Ski School and Guides providing expert guidance. They know the area better than the back of their hand and are a trusted source for all things snow.
For after the slopes, or those days out of your boots, Furano offers a plethora of non-skiing activities. Onsens, both natural and man-made, are all around! If you have access to a car, two noteworthy ones are Fukiage Riten-no-yu and Hakuginso Hot Springs. Hakuginso Hot Springs is the perfect place to stop with a group of people, as they offer multiple indoor and outdoor baths, for males and females separately, as well as co-ed. Fukiage Riten-no-yu is a natural hot spring. Located on Mt. Tokachidake in the middle of the woods, this natural bathing spot is not only free but also open 24 hours a day. Other outdoor activities besides skiing, are snowshoeing and ice fishing! There are a couple of different companies that rent out gear, and take you out
Another noteworthy picturesque pit stop is the Shirahige Waterfall, which is beautiful any season. Either surrounded by lush trees, or large icicles, it’ll make a picturesque stop during your time in the area!
At night, it is worth a walk around the Ningle Terrace. Independent shops and vendors are open at night, between a lit-up path. It is worth a visit, and make sure to bring your camera and a pair of gloves!
Finally, when organizing your trip, don't forget to consider your dining options! Fortunately, in Furano, there is a plethora of choices, and most of them are sure to satisfy your taste buds.
Fenix Restaurant and Kitchen is a great way to start the day. It’s always bustling, as it’s known as a local favorite, but you’re never left waiting long!
Furanoya is perfect and a popular spot to stop at for lunch. Perfect for a warm Japanese curry or soup curry to warm you from within. It hits the spot after a morning on the slopes and can make you feel like you’re in an authentic Japanese kitchen.
Fenix Restaurant and Kitchen offers breakfast lunch and dinner, to suit whatever meal you're looking for. With an extensive menu, you can go back a couple of days in a row and still taste something different, footsteps from your room in Fenix Furano.
SHIRONA Dumplings is a new and noteworthy addition to the Furano scene. Opened last September, this gyoza stop should be at the top of your list. The owner, Keisuke, makes all the dumplings in-house. We were lucky to grab a seat, enjoy the various flavors of dumplings and homemade sauces, as well as sign our name on the white walls (which we think will fill up pretty fast). The walls tell the story of how many people from different countries have all come and shared their love for the same thing: delicious gyozas.
Navo, was a hidden gem we came across unexpectedly. We were on the hunt for a vegetarian-friendly meal and found the first all-vegan restaurant bar that either of us had seen in Japan. Once you step in, you feel immediately at home; it was almost like stepping into a big restored tree-house, with good drinks and food for the soul.
In essence, Furano embodies Hokkaido's hidden charm, offering a tapestry of experiences that captivate visitors year-round. Whether you're carving through the slopes of Furano Ski Resort, indulging in the therapeutic waters of its onsens, or savoring the flavors of its diverse culinary scene, each moment in Furano is a testament to the region's allure.
